Sorrow, bravery and the power of donation

“When I was a nurse in the STICU (surgical trauma intensive care unit) I used to take care of the patients who became donors and often I would see that heartbroken family sobbing over their loved one.  It broke my heart and put me in tears and I struggled to get through that shift.  At the same time I was truly amazed by their pure bravery to donate their loved ones organs.  The courage and strength of the donor family bewildered me.  In their most difficult hour of their lives they were able to rise out of their sorrow and think of the lives of others who will be saved.  I haven’t worked in the STICU in years but I still remember the faces and words of those donor families as if it was yesterday.  God bless them.”  University Transplant Center Employee
